Project Introduction
City Collective was engaged to lead the redevelopment of the Paul Murray Recreation Centre in the City of Onkaparinga. Working closely with stakeholders and community representatives, City Collective developed a concept design that reflects the centre’s long-standing tradition as a hub for gymnastics and broader community activities. The design focuses on creating a functional, dynamic, and inclusive space that balances modern sports infrastructure with an emphasis on safety, sustainability, and accessibility.
Key Project Challenges
The project encountered several key challenges, including the need to modernise aging infrastructure while preserving the centre’s core identity as a vital community facility. Limited spatial efficiency and outdated amenities created operational inefficiencies, particularly for gymnastics programming, which demanded flexible yet dedicated spaces. Additionally, accommodating diverse user groups—ranging from elite athletes to community participants—while maintaining affordability and accessibility required thoughtful design and consultation.
Key Project Innovations
City Collective’s design introduced a series of innovative solutions, including a reimagined, multi-purpose gymnastics hall with dedicated zones for different skill levels and training activities. A central entry foyer serves as a dynamic and welcoming hub, featuring improved wayfinding, natural light, and active spaces to encourage participation. The architectural approach reflects movement and rhythm, with facades and interiors symbolising gymnastic motion. Sustainability was integrated through energy-efficient materials, durable finishes, and future-proofed infrastructure to ensure long-term operational efficiency. The plan also prioritised community engagement spaces, such as spectator seating, kinder gym areas, and flexible meeting rooms, fostering inclusivity and multi-generational use.
