Project Introduction
City Collective collaborated with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council to design a comprehensive master plan for the Macedon Ranges Sports Precinct. Located in New Gisborne, this project aimed to transform the existing Netball Pavilion site and adjoining land into a vibrant hub for active and passive recreation. The vision centered on creating a welcoming, accessible, and sustainable precinct that fosters community connections and supports a wide range of sports and recreational activities.
Key Project Challenges
The project encountered several challenges, including balancing the needs of various user groups, addressing the shortfall of sports facilities, and integrating new infrastructure within the natural landscape. The site’s rapid population growth in recent years intensified the demand for facilities such as netball courts, sports ovals, and community spaces. Additionally, the preservation of high-value native vegetation and heritage trees required a thoughtful and sensitive design approach.
Key Project Innovations
City Collective introduced innovative strategies to overcome these challenges. Key features included a centralised pedestrian spine that links the entire precinct, dual-use sports fields for cricket and AFL, and a multi-sport indoor hub. The design also incorporated environmentally sustainable solutions, such as stormwater management with vegetated swales and rain gardens. Thoughtfully designed social spaces, such as a pavilion with a covered outdoor area and community playgrounds, further emphasised inclusivity and enhanced the precinct’s role as a regional destination.
