Project Introduction
City Collective was appointed to lead the redevelopment of the Fremantle Oval, a landmark project aimed at revitalising this historic site. Working closely with the City of Fremantle, Fremantle Football Club, South Fremantle Football Club, WA Football, and other stakeholders, City Collective developed a comprehensive master plan that balances the site’s rich heritage with its future as a dynamic, multi-use precinct. The project integrates sporting facilities, mixed-use housing, and public amenities, aligning with government priorities for sustainable development and community well-being.
Key Project Challenges
The redevelopment faced significant challenges, including preserving the historical integrity of Fremantle Oval and its surrounding UNESCO World Heritage-listed areas, such as Fremantle Prison. Additionally, the site’s fragmented layout, aging infrastructure, and limited accessibility posed barriers to seamless integration with neighboring institutions. The project also needed to accommodate a diverse range of uses, from elite sports and community events to housing and public open spaces, all while achieving sustainability goals.
Key Project Innovations
City Collective deployed innovative strategies to address these challenges. The design realigns the oval and integrates it with new facilities, such as a refurbished Victoria Pavilion and a multi-functional grandstand. Advanced sustainability initiatives, including solar power and community batteries, aim to achieve net-zero emissions. The project also introduces diverse housing options, with over 200 dwellings designed for affordability and accessibility, while enhancing connectivity to the surrounding precincts through pedestrian zones and shared streets. This holistic approach establishes Fremantle Oval as a vibrant destination and a model for integrated urban design.
