Project Introduction
City Collective was engaged to design the Caulfield Sports and Community Centre as part of a broader vision to enhance the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve. Working in collaboration with the Melbourne Football Club and key stakeholders, the project sought to create a multifunctional facility that seamlessly integrates high-performance sports infrastructure with community-focused amenities. This redevelopment was envisioned as a vital hub for sports, recreation, and community connection, catering to a wide range of users and promoting sustainability.
Key Project Challenges
The project faced several challenges. The site’s location within a heritage-listed reserve demanded a sensitive approach to design, ensuring harmony with its historical and environmental context. Additionally, the facility had to balance the Melbourne Football Club’s elite training requirements with broader community access. Site constraints, such as limited access points, existing infrastructure, and a need for significant upgrades to utilities and landscaping, further complicated the design process.
Key Project Innovations
City Collective addressed these challenges with innovative solutions. The design integrates state-of-the-art training facilities for AFL players with community spaces like multi-use fields and a central pavilion. Key sustainability initiatives include solar energy systems, water recycling, and environmentally conscious building materials. The project also emphasises accessibility and inclusivity, with pedestrian-friendly pathways and public spaces that encourage community engagement. This holistic approach ensures the Caulfield Sports and Community Centre serves as a model for integrated urban design.
