City Collective

Central Market Redevelopment

Project Introduction

The Central Market Redevelopment reimagines the ageing Central Market Arcade as a once-in-a-generation civic project for Adelaide Central Market and the wider City Centre. More than a commercial upgrade, the project positions the Arcade as a custodian of South Australian identity, a catalyst for tourism, and a connector of key public moments. It sets a renewed civic legacy, shaping Adelaide’s cultural and economic future.

Key Project Challenges

The primary challenge was transforming outdated building stock into a future-focused mixed-use destination while respecting its civic significance. The development needed to heighten physical access, maximise visual transparency, and introduce flexible retail formats, all while subtly connecting to surrounding heritage, including the Sir Samuel Way Building. City Collective undertook a holistic review to ensure alignment with the City of Adelaide’s vision and long-term principles.

Key Project Innovations

The redevelopment delivers a seamless ground plane that reconnects the city to the site and enhances pedestrian permeability. Visual links between podium retail levels and activation of the rooftop create new community destinations. Rotatable tenancies and diverse entertainment offerings enable adaptability over time. The project balances immediate retail success with long-term resilience and civic value.
